Art and Design Curriculum

Intent

Based on The National Curriculum statement of purpose, it is therefore our intent that the art and design curriculum should allow and encourage all children to:
• find enjoyment in art and creativity
• hold a positive self-image and confidence
• discover a sense of purpose and fulfilment in artistic expression
• appreciate a wide range of artists and art works
• experiment with a range of media
• use a range of materials and techniques competently
• develop their observation and description skills
• express ideas and feelings through creative work and in both two and three dimensions
• value and respect their work and the work of others
• discuss their work using appropriate vocabulary
 
Implementation

West Ashton School use Kapow mixed age scheme of work to deliver our art curriculum.  It is designed to:
• consider a variety of approaches that are matched to the activity and the ability of the children
• look for opportunities to examine exhibits, artefacts and historical buildings of interest
• clearly identify whether the art activities are exclusively art or whether they are applying skills through one or more aspects of their wider curriculum eg within a history context
• look to develop clear links between art and design and computing to provide opportunities to develop the children's computing capabilities
• always ensure that issues of Health and Safety are addressed in the planning and delivery of the art curriculum
• encourage the children's development of personal and social skills through the art and design curriculum
• provide children with opportunities to work individually, in pairs, small groups and even as a whole class
 
Impact
  • Enjoyment of the Art and Design curriculum will promote creativity, achievement, confidence and inquisitive minds.
  • Art and design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across school. Teachers have higher expectations and more quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways.
  • All children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified.
  • Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world.
  • Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art.
  • Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work.
  • All children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.
A high standard of work is expected in the children’s sketch books which are used and added to each year. Displays of children’s work in Art is also encouraged. 

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
  • dedicated Art Curriculum Leader time out of class to monitor and support.
  • pupil discussions and interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  • work samples within books are looked at by the Art Subject Leader.
  • learning walks
  • staff questionnaires (teacher voice).
